Ellen Pompeo paid $10 million for house next door in Malibu – DIRT

You say showbiz is one of the most volatile industries, especially for working actors, but tell Ellen Pompeo that. The 52-year-old Massachusetts native has had a stint on Grey’s Anatomy, the hit ABC medical drama series, in which she plays protagonist Meredith Gray for the past 17 years. During that time, she’s seen almost all of her co-stars quit or fall by the wayside.

For her dedication to the show, Pompeo was richly rewarded. According to Forbes, she grossed $19 million in 2020 alone, and she has long topped lists of the “highest paid actresses” at year-end. Some of this money was put into real estate investments; She once owned a Spanish-style rental property in the Hollywood Hills and a mansion in the Hamptons, although both houses were recently sold.

Back in 2013, Pompeo paid Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman about $6.4 million to purchase their Buff & Hensman-designed Malibu beach home, complete with ocean views from its cliff-top location and walled courtyard with swimming pool .

Since then, property values have risen dramatically, and records show that Pompeo just spent another $10.3 million to purchase the less-than-impressive home next door to Buff & Hensman’s estate. This key purchase gives her 1.67 contiguous acres in Malibu’s desirable Encinal Bluffs neighborhood, stretching from the ocean to the Pacific Coast Highway, plus two adjoining homes totaling eight bedrooms and 7.5 baths.

Since the house was never on the market, there are no particularly interesting details or pictures of Pompeo’s latest acquisition. But the inland lot has ocean views and is lushly landscaped with lawns, koi ponds, and multiple rock waterfalls. The existing building was built in 1980 and was owned by the same family for decades. According to tax documents, it comprises five bedrooms, four bathrooms and a powder room in a living space of around 4,000 square meters.

Home to some of Malibu’s most secluded and uncrowded beaches, Encinal Bluffs has long attracted a crowd of celebrity homeowners. Current residents include Cindy Crawford, Leo DiCaprio, Aaron Rodgers and former Disney CEO Michael Eisner, who currently wants $225 million for his village estate in Encinal Bluffs.

In addition to the expanded Malibu property, Pompeo and her longtime husband Chris Ivery also maintain a historic home in Los Feliz’s Laughlin Park gated community. A few years ago, they hired famed interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard to work his decorative magic on this 1930’s mansion, originally designed by Paul R. Williams. Photos of the elegant results were published in a 2017 issue of Architectural Digest.
