Melrose: opening of the first two properties of the affordable housing complex “La Central”

Real estate developers celebrated the completion of two new affordable housing properties in the sprawling La Central residential complex in the Melrose section of the Bronx earlier this week, as reported YIMBY.

Located at 556 and 600 Bergen Avenue, Buildings A and B include nearly 500 low-income units, a new YMCA, a production studio for BronxNet, a rooftop farm operated by GrowNYC and a mix of retail businesses.

In both buildings, residential amenities range from studios to four-bedroom apartments and are available exclusively to residents earning between 30% and 100% of the area’s median income (MAI).

Speaking at the opening of the first units, Bronx Borough President Ruben Díaz Jr. said, “The Central is a monumental project that will bring more than 1,000 affordable and sustainable built units to The Hub and will not only transform the borough and the city by serving as a model on how to properly achieve affordable development. He added, “In addition to affordable and supportive housing, Buildings A and B will get this development off to a good start, with a state-of-the-art YMCA, retail space and newly renovated BronxNet Television production studio. in Melrose. “

Designed by MHG Architects, FXCollaborative and Future Green Studio, La Central will eventually include five individual buildings. The residential component will include more than 1,000 affordable apartments, 80,000 square feet of community facilities, 45,000 square feet of retail, a public skatepark and a rooftop telescope that will be controlled by the Bronx High School of Science.

The project development team includes The Hudson Companies, BRP Companies, ELH-TKC, Breaking Ground and Comunlife. Breaking Ground and Comunilife completed the development of a 160-unit supportive housing and low-income building (Building D) as part of the overall development of La Central in 2019.
